Watch The First Trailer For Studio Ghibli’s Earwig and the Witch

2014 was the last time we enjoyed a brand new Studio Ghibli film. That’s too long a time to wait for a new film and later this month the wait will be over when Earwig and the Witch will be released. Today we get a glimpse at the Japanese Trailer courtesy of NHK Japan.
Every Ghibli film is an special occasion, this one is just a little extra special. It’s the studio’s first CGI created film from a studio renowned for traditional hand drawn animation. I’m not a fan of 3D Animation, whilst the character does showcase that trademark Ghibli design, it just doesn’t leave me with lots of confidence.
Goro Miyazaki (From Upon Poppy Hill) directs this one. A story about an young orphaned girl called Earwig who is unaware of her magical powers. Her life takes a drastic turn when she’s adopted by an mysterious couple who introduce her to world of monsters and magic.
England in the 1990s. The main character is Aya, a 10-year-old girl. Growing up as an orphan since she was a baby, Aya was very comfortable living in an orphanage where everyone could do what she wanted. However, one day, a strange duo who suddenly came, a flashy woman and a tall man, take her home. “My name is Bella Yaga. I’m a witch. I brought you home because I wanted help.” Aya replies to the woman who claims to be so, “Then, it’s decided. Instead of my aunt teaching me magic, I’ll be my aunt’s assistant.” However, Bella Yaga just uses Aya as an assistant. No matter how much she asks, no matter how hard she works, no magic will be taught.
We’re unsure when the UK version of this trailer will arrive online. Today Deadline report The Elysian Group have won the rights to screen the film in the UK sometime in 2021. Earwig and the Witch will be televised on NHK Japan from 30th December.
