Watch Post War Melodrama The Aftermath UK Trailer

Keira Knightley career has to be like one big roller coaster ride, some highs and a lot of lows. Spring next year the British actress will be hoping The Aftermath will get her back on track. A post World War II melodrama directed by James Kent (Testament Of Youth) also starring Alexander Skarsgård, Jason Clarke.

Knightley stars as Rachael Morgan, the wife of British colonel Lewis (Clarke) who was assigned to Hamburg to help in reconstruction. The pair decides to share the house they get with the previous owner (Skarsgård).

Period dramas seem to be safe ground for the actress and probably the best type of film to get her back on track. This feels is inspired a lot by the Merchant Ivory films (Remains Of The Day, A Room With A View). That’s not a bad thing as it will go down well with Downton Abbey fans.

What’s a little worrying is the length of time Fox Searchlight took to get a release date, nearly a year after the production ended (nearly two years when it’s released). Do they have faith in this film? This won’t be a film that will break box office records, certainly one that will find its home more in Arthouse cinemas.

THE AFTERMATH is set in post-war in 1946. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision. They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to ion and betrayal.
