Apologies if the title of this post makes you think Highlander has gone all religious, it hasn’t. Netflix have released the Trailer for their ‘Originals’ film The Two Popes.
Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce star in this intimate look at a historic turning point in the Catholic Church. Directed by Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles (City Of God, The Constant Gardener).
The Two Popes tells the story of Pope Benedict (Hopkins) and the ascension of Cardinal Bergoglio (Pryce) to the papacy. The church has been plagued by scandal especially in abuse and film looks like will try show the humanity of the men rather than spiritual leaders. If they try show these men with remorseful tone or men plagued by guilt of historical events? Whatever it will come with controversy.
All religions all have their momentous times in their histories. This film is inspired by events in Catholicism and when a pope retires its a big deal. Usually Popes stay in the position until their death, Benedict was the first Pope to resign since 1415.
From Fernando Meirelles, the Academy Award-nominated director of “City of God,” and three-time Academy Award nominated screenwriter Anthony McCarten, comes an intimate story of one of the most dramatic transitions of power in the last 2,000 years. Frustrated with the direction of the church, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) requests permission to retire in 2012 from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins). Instead, facing scandal and self-doubt, the introspective Pope Benedict summons his harshest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that would shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind Vatican walls, a struggle commences between both tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness, as these two very different men confront elements from their pasts in order to find common ground and forge a future for a billion followers around the world.
The film also stars Juan Minujín, Sidney Cole, and Thomas D Williams.
The Two Popes will be shown in select cinemas on November 27 in the US, November 29 in the UK and on Netflix December 20. The film will make it’s European Premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 7th October [book here].
