Sunday Short Theatre – Reneepoptosis (2019)

Reneepoptosis (2019)

One of the tings we love from Sunday Short Theatre, is the one problem we thrive on…Choosing what film to shine the spotlight on. This week’s choice is the award winning short Reneepoptosis from Renee Zhan who wants to take us on a journey of self discovery. A strange world but will you find God?

This short won the best animated short at 2019 Sundance Film Festival. A strange world of wonderful creatures, finger mountains and protagonists all based around the filmmaker. This fascinating little 10 minute film follows 3 dauntless explorers embark on one crusade that will challenge them Psychically and mentally. The question you may ask, what are our adventurers looking for?

This film giving me Terry Gilliam style animation, from the surreal to the humour. Off course with the filmmakers own touch including reflecting something that’s personal to her. Sometimes we have to go on journeys to discover or rediscover ourselves or something and the filmmaker went on one to create this film.

Zhan was a Harvard University student who went on a postgraduate exchange to Japan. Reneepoptosis in a way is her journey a self meditation with heady dose of comedy mixed with the serious nature of the film. We should always try learn something about ourselves and those surreal creatures we meet are those obstacles.

Winner of the 2019 Sundance Jury Prize for Best Animated Short

Three Renees go on a quest to find God, who is also Renee. As they traverse the mountains and valleys of Renee, they discover all the great joys, sorrows, and mysteries of being Renee.
