Sunday Short Theatre – (DIS)CONNECTED

Technology can be fascinating and we do love it, one thing that terrifies us all is AI. In this week’s Sunday Short Theatre choice (DIS)CONNECTED, AI clashes with reality in a Mothers memory.
This week’s choice comes from Karl Stelter and it’s a sci-fi drama. The 7 minute film also described as gripping and suspenseful and set in a future that doesn’t feel fictional. It’s 2071 Mina is a grieving mother who lost her daughter and thanks to an implant that erases the agony of the memories . The implant starts to malfunction and glitches force mina to relive the supressed memories. Desperate to get the implant out she has to go a hacker that pushes her on an nightmarish journey.
I’ve said before on this site, AI is fearing us all and is slowly creeping into our everyday lives. From Chat PGT, part of our mobile phones, we can see it’s benefits and can also see beyond it. It’s the beyond that fears us the most, and many believe what humanity we have is under threat. Our freedom under threat from darker sinister forces or more control governments? The mind is a powerful tool that can also be manipulated, when you are in mourning you are easier target.
We want control and the sci-fi basis of (DIS)CONNECTED is a perfect vessel. The AI implant challenges dealing with grief and as the premise hints, how it’s dealt with is temporary.Sci-fi can be poignant, intimate as much as powerful and confrontational.
When a mother’s AI-generated memories clash with reality, she must confront her past for the sake of her future.
