Review – Wonder Woman: Bloodlines

Directed by Sam Liu (Suicide Squade: Hell To Pay, Gotham By Gaslight), ‘Wonder Woman: Bloodlines’ is the latest entry in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies series, and the first title in the series in ten years to focus on Wonder Woman herself. Bloodlines introduces us once again to Amazon princess Diana of Themyscira, who chooses to save fighter pilot Steve Trevor and return him to his home in America – setting in motion one of Wonder Woman’s most captivating chapters. Fulfilling the role of both ambassador as well as protector, Diana soon earns the name Wonder Woman from the gracious people of Earth. Equally strong in body, heart and will, she makes it her mission to help a troubled young girl enlisted by a deadly organization known as Villainy, Inc., whose criminal  have their sights set on invading Themyscira, Diana’s paradise home.

During the film’s opening scenes we are caught up to speed with Diana’s superhero origins which honestly just seemed unnecessary to me. While it is the first Wonder Woman headlining film in the DCAU in ten years, given the success of the character and the recent Patty Jenkins live action venture just a couple of years ago it seems very unnecessary to catch the audience up once again.

The film has the same animation quality we’ve come to love from the DC Animated Universe and a superb voice cast, with Rosario Dawson returning to the role of Wonder Woman for the sixth time and Constance Zimmer delivering a fantastic take on Veronica Cale. The only issue I had with the film was the writing this time around, it just felt really rushed and the tone was all over the place for the most part which made it hard to truly get truly engaged in what was going on. Wonder Woman: Bloodlines is an enjoyable entry in the series that hopefully will serve as a stepping store for better, less awkwardly fleshed out animated ventures for Diana.  With a superb voice cast and a great score by Frederik Wiedmann, who previously scored ‘Gotham By Gaslight’ and  “Teen Titans: The Judas Contract” it is worth giving this one a watch but don’t expect greatness.
