David Michod continues his relationship with Netflix when they announced today production for his next ‘Netflix Originals‘, The King has gone into production.

After the relative success of War Machine (starring Brad Pitt), his next film will be inspired by the Great Bard, William Shakespeare play. Inspired by his Henry the IV and V plays.

Here’s the short but sweet synopsis…
Based on Shakespeare’s Henry the IV and V, a young, disgraced prince, Hal inherits the crown and must learn what it means to be a king, guided by his one true friend, Falstaff.

The main cast was also announce today with Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird) will be playing Hal. It’s been a momentous, breakout year for the young star with Call Me By Your Name winning him Best Actor Oscar.

His one ‘true friend’ Falstaff will be played by Joel Edgerton(Bright, Loving, The Great Gatsby). He will be ed by Robert Pattinson (Good Time, The Lost City of Z) who will be playing The Dauphin; Ben Mendelsohn (Darkest Hour, Ready Player One) will be playing King Henry IV; Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp(The Summoning, The Dancer)will be playing Princess Catherine; Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Macbeth) will be playing William; Tom Glynn-Carney will be playing Hotspur; Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie (Leave No Trace) will be playing Philippa.

A fantastic diverse cast, a mixture of actors kicking off their careers and classically trained. Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelsohn, and even Robert Pattinson all regulars in Michod’s films. Edgerton is also the co-writer for The King and making this a worth a look when it’s released. The actor is certainly highly underrated, with his directorial debut The Gift, deserving of more praise.

This won’t be a like for like version, nor do we know when exactly when it will be set. Shakespeare sometimes is not always seen as someone who will appeal to the general masses. Hopefully, Michod will change that.

No word on exactly when The King will be released. Netflix has told us it will be releasing the film in 2019.
