HBO’s Harry Potter Series Casts Its Three Leads

HBO Harry Potter series chosen their lead roles?

HBO’s Harry Potter series has cast its three leads. Dominic McLaughlin (Grow, Gifted) will play the titular role, ed by newcomer Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton (Matilda the Musical, Starlight Express) as Hermione Granger.

Much like the beloved films, the TV series is set to span at least a decade, with the three young actors presumably cast for its entirety. This is in a similar vein to Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, who made the same commitment to Warner Bros.

McLaughlin, Stout and Stanton have received praise from showrunner sca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod: “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

In total, 32,000 actors auditioned for these roles, contributing to the show’s already immense anticipation. The casting process took months, with the open callout requesting children aged between 9 and 11 as of April 2025. Additionally, the call described a commitment to “inclusive, diverse casting.”

A star-studded array of adult talent s the three. John Lithgow (Conclave, Killers of the Flower Moon) will play Dumbledore, alongside Paapa Essiedu (Black Mirror, Anne Boleyn) as Professor Snape, Janet McTeer (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, The Menu) as Professor McGonagall and Nick Frost (How To Train Your Dragon, Shaun of the Dead) as Rubeus Hagrid.

HBO’s Harry Potter series is expected to stream on HBO Max in 2026.
