George Clooney to Direct THE YANKEE COMANDANTE

10 years ago George Clooney made his directorial debut with Confessions of A Dangerous Mind and since then he’s had a decent success behind the camera with Leatherheads, Good Night, Good Luck, Ides of March an achievement not many A-List actors can say they’ve done. Tonight reports are been released online that Clooney is about to add another film to his directors CV and to no surprise a film of political nature THE YANKEE COMANDANTE which is based on a article from a recent The New Yorker Magazine.
Deadline are reporting that Focus Features have bought the rights to the story which was printed in Mays edition by David Grann, a true story about William Alexander Morgan an American who helped Fidel Castro overthrow Fulgencio Batista During the Cuban Revolution. Morgan became the second only foreigner (other been Che Guevara) to be awarded the prestigious Comandante. As soon as Castro gained power in Cuba he became suspicious of Morgans motives he was arrested despite been seen as many as the man who ripped into J Edgar Hoover the wrong way. With the Cubans and American confused what side Morgan was playing ball for Castro ordered Morgan’s death by firing squad believing he was an American intelligence spy.
I do like a good political story and Clooney does seem the perfect directors choice for such an unique fascinating story of a man no one had a clue what his motives where, possibly fooling both sides. Regular partner in crime Grant Heslov will co-produce with Clooney on this film through the Smokehouse Pictures and at this stage there’s no word that Clooney himself may play Morgan either though don’t count out the possibility. It’s believed Clooney’s next project could possibly be Monument Men an Adaptation of the Robert M.Edsel novel The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History about a group of American & British museum curators, historians who group together to save some of the world’s greatest artworks from the Nazis during World War 2. No exact word if this one has the green if it does its expected Clooney will write, direct and star.
Clooney and Heslov have just finished producing Ben Affleck’s Argo which is expected to be released late October/November but we will see George Clooney in front of a camera starring in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi flick Gravity which is due out 2013.
