Gareth Edwards To Potentially Direct Dune 4?

After recent reports that the third film in the Dune series, Dune Messiah, will be Denis Villeneuve’s final outing to Arrakis and that production could start from as early as June this year, rumours have begun surfacing that hint towards Warner Bros. Pictures future plans for the franchise.
According to a report from Daniel Richtman, Warner Bros. have approached Gareth Edwards (Rogue One,The Creator) to possibly direct the fourth film in the series, which is likely to adapt the third book in Frank Herbert’s Dune saga, Children of Dune.
Edward’s flair for grounded, character driven stories set against larger than life sci-fi backdrops is something he has perfected with time, and the fact he can do so whilst dealing with fairly modest budgets could work in Warner Bros. favour. He can easily deliver the same level of artistry and scale that Villeneuve has brought to Dune with a nuanced approach that would please fans of the series and the studio.
Villeneuve has made it clear that Dune Messiah, which concludes the Paul Atreides storyline, will be his last film in the series as he has stated that the books get too weird after that point. Children of Dune would be a hard task for any director to undertake as the story is set ten whole years after Messiah, meaning many of the core characters from the Villeneuve films would either be entirely absent or have limited screen time.
So as the world eagerly awaits Villeneuve’s last trek into the Dune franchise, fans can start dreaming of what potential Gareth Edwards could bring to this iconic series if he seals the deal with Warner Bros.
