Masamune Shirow‘s classic 1995 anime Ghost In The Shell is up there next to Akira as a masterpiece plus making many greatest ever film lists worldwide. In Japan many Manga or anime have become live action remakes are made but for the west and Hollywood it’s a different matter. Over the other side of world in New Zealand anime comes to Hollywood as Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures announce the the film is now in production. Check out the first look image above of Scarlett Johansson who is set to play lead role.

Ghost In The Shell is based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series of the same name (and internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property) written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow .Ghost In The Shell follows the Major (Johansson), a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

I’m 40 and in 1990’s I was in my late teens, early twenties I fell in love with Manga and anime. It was a great time to be a fanboy or girl as the doors where opening, great magazines (Anime UK), new titles and comics arriving every week. Like many folks my age Jonathan Ross was probably part responsible when he introduced Akira (& Roujin Z, Wings Of Honneamise) with Ghost In The Shell one of the first anime’s to get an UK cinema release. The anime was also a major success also in USA so like many classic films every little details will be studied and judged intensely.

Johansson’s Lucy co-star Pilou Asbæk is onboard as Batou as gruff Batou, her trusted lieutenant. The legendary Beat Takeshi will play Section 9 chief Daisuke Aramaki, Michael Pitt as cyborg revolutionary Kuze, Juliette Binoche as a new character called Dr. Ouelet, with Kaori Momoi in an unspecified role.

The filming is taking place in the city of Wellington with Snow White And The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders is behind the lens. The anime is a multi layered technological film so will be interesting to see how Sanders will deal with this side of things, Weta Workshop will take care of the special effects.

Ghost In The Shell is set for a March 2017 release date.

  1. Hi Cassandra, I have to it I have bad feeling on this project too. A Lot like the talk when they tried to make Akira a Hollywood film. The director I would call average still to prove, as on the Stewart thing, can’t comment.

  2. Crap. This is bad. Director Rupert Sander’s Snow White and The Huntsmen was a terrible film. And thus I don’t have much hope in this now. Plus, he was caught in that cheating scandal with Kristin Stewart. An actress on one of his own films. Can’t lie feels like the whole M. Night Shyamalan fiasco again. But in Shyamalan’s defense some of his films like Lady in the Water are actually good.
