Film Review – The Voyeurs (2021)

Sydney Sweeney and Justice Smith star in The Voyeurs

The familiar story arcs of peeking through your windows, watching the neighbours and usually noticing objectional activity remains captivating in this well acted thriller, delivered to perfection by an interesting cast that succumb to curiosity with dire circumstance.

The sultry mood spreads immediately inspired by erotic author, Dannielle Steele akin opening credits font, set to the appropriately scorching Angel Olson tune, Eyes without a Face, with the shot eventually panning out to reveal, the whole time we have been in macro-close-up to an eyeball. My attention never faltered.

In love, Pippa (Sydney Sweeney) and Thomas (Justice Smith) have moved into a beautiful loft style apartment complete with open space and conveniently oversized windows.

Whilst peering out on a regular basis, the pair become unreasonably consumed by two extensively sex-driven neighbours across the way.

Deciding on a whim to run across the road to crash a Halloween gathering, Pip, in particular, eventually connects and suspiciously becomes friends with both, but individually.

Complications naturally arise.

Exemplary Sydney Sweeney (White Lotus, Handmaids Tale) reminds me of dynamic early career Jennifer Lawrence, the film belongs to her in multiple critical scene stealing moments.

Stimulating Australian, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, alongside Dorset thespian, Ben Hardy (Pixie, Bohemian Rhapsody) are superb as the racy neighbours. A terrific soundtrack backs up the mood swings and surprises.

Try to avoid spoilers; although if you’re aware of concealed events in, Sliver (1993), Body Double (1984) and of course the grandmaster of suspense Alfred Hitchcock‘s, Rear Window (1954) you may be ahead of the provocative game.
