Film Review – The End Of Sex (2022)

The End Of Sex out to own in the UK on Digital 3rd July 2023 from BlueFinch Films

Emma (Emily Hampshire) and Josh (Jonas Chernick) have been married for about 10 years and they have two daughters who they love with all their hearts. Sending them off to camp during the winter months, they find themselves alone and without any pressing responsibility for the first time in years.

They try to get back what they had before they had children, but it seems that things have changed. So, they decide that the time is right to try and spice things up and get some life back into their marriage. The trouble is that when they get other people involved, it gets complicated.

The End of Sex is a romantic comedy directed by Sean Garrity and written by Jonas Chernick. Something which perhaps takes a little inspiration from other romantic comedy writers such as Nancy Myers and Nora Ephron.

Emma and Josh both have their ideas of what they want and how they could make their love lives more interesting. Emma invites her friend, Wendy (Melanie Scrofano) over to have a threesome and Josh thinks that perhaps adding recreational drugs may loosen them up a little. However, neither of these things do anything for them and even causes a little more trouble than they would have liked.

All the cast do a great job with Hampshire and Chernick having good chemistry and some hilarious moments in the sub plots. Scrofano particularly brings a few extra laughs as her friendship with Emma goes deeper than she ever imagined.

However, The End of Sex feels rather quaint and doesn’t really deal with how Emma and Josh may have lost their way. Besides the title, it gives the audience the impression that once marriage begins then sex is over and that joke in itself feels dated.

There are some nice moments between the two leads and there’s even a moment where they may actually start talking openly about their issues like adults. However, it pulls out before it goes that far and may leave the audience frustrated. Unfortunately, this leaves The End of Sex feeling like a comedy which doesn’t want to take any risks and may be too formulaic for its own good.
