Seance_(2021)

So much paranormal potential eventually hits the mark, albeit non challenging cliched by-the-numbers story set within an elite boarding school for girls whom occasionally stand In front of mirrors chanting in order to conjure spirits.

Thankfully fast paced with contained scares from the outset with a reasonably interesting ensemble clearly led, head and shoulders by magnificent Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation, Rainy Day in New York) as new student with attitude, Camille.

Beginning with an early tragedy, the mean girls’ clique of Fairfield Academy is shrinking fast, one death after an another under mysterious circumstances usually involving flickering lights, open window curtains flailing, sudden existence under bedsheets or a presence in corners where nobody was before.

There’s even a ballet class. It’s all here.

Camille reluctantly s forces with the remaining students, in particular fragile Helina (Ella Rae Smith) to figure out if it’s an ancient curse or actual being made to warn the girls of a higher demon force. The gripping finale is worth the wait.

Accomplished genre writer, Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Blair Witch) achieves a lot as first-time feature director with budget restraints, however far from Giallo; which it may be trying to homage.

Low key although rogue costuming by Leslie Kavanagh is perfect.

Full of hidden talent, Suki Waterhouse, had to have got this movie made, guiding Séance, with dynamic understated screen bounce.

Outside of his gratifying cast, one of the most impressive moments are deliberately arresting, old school credits font.

Amicable horror trajectories mostly work far better than certain story developments, still a perfect choice to view on, Shudder.

An immersive score by Sicker Man is chronic, pump up the volume.

★★ 1/2
