Film Review – Maybe I Do (2023)

Opening with Academy Award nominee, William H. Macy ugly crying alone into his popcorn whilst watching a classic foreign film, soon to be comforted by Oscar winner, a concerned Diane Keaton offering to be a friend and talk it out.
Then quite awkwardly, maybe more!
This is just the beginning in a series of high concept comedy pratfalls between two families connecting through romantic entanglements that most of them don’t know about yet.
An all-star cast are worth respecting and really just the thread holding this irritating farce together including two of my favourites Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, whom we first see in a one-sided hotel room rendezvous.
There’re mix ups when worlds collide and weird situations galore for a young couple and their unsuspecting families. Everything from unhappy marriages to aging with dignity is explored mostly light-heartedly with occasional swings of seriousness aging dissatisfaction.
An applying sound logic on romance is loose here.
Alongside the 1977 X-rated Looking for Mr. Goodbar duo, Gere and Keaton, are excellent Emma Roberts, Australian Luke Bracey (Hacksaw Ridge, Elvis) and delightful Natalie Ortega helping change things up throughout.
Not afraid to it being quite partial to a chick-flick or three, but when Smurfs spotted on top of a wedding cake is a highlight, there’s a problem.
However, a smile emerged to realising another classic Gere connection within the ensemble. Julia Roberts as Vivian with Richard as Edward in the timeless Pretty Woman (1990) is here starring with Julia’s niece, equally as charming and tender Emma.
Maybe I Do is not to worst experience of fading love, it’s definitely stagey and would be suitable to live theatre, there’s glimpses of humour bubbling by a quartet of established performers at least ionately enjoying each other’s company amongst the ridiculousness. An affair NOT to .
