Film Review – They Came Together (2014)

The premise of this film is nothing you haven’t seen in your typical romantic comedy film. Boy and Girl are polar opposites, they meet, they fall in love, something gets between them, they break up, Boy/Girl realise they made a mistake, and they get back together. The film tries to ape/parody the genre. It takes all those tropes, and those stock characters, blends them into one film and out came “They Came Together.”

Now I hadn’t seen anything about the film before going to watch the movie. To be honest, I hadn’t even heard of it before hand. But I liked the cast (the cast is immense, and a who’s who of comedy) and decided to go into it blind. I had read the synopsis, so I kinda knew what I was getting myself in for.

The movie itself is essentially a homage movie, in the view of “not another teen movie” style franchise, but the main difference is the cast. The cast is current people, who are on the top of their game at the moment, whether it be in TV or the Film medium. So I was super excited before going into it.

BUT, I was vastly disappointed with it. The laughs were practically non-existent. The cast was vastly underused, or badly managed. It had actors doing things out of their comfort zone – Amy Poehler for example in the beginning seems to do slapstick comedy – and it all fails in general.

I really can’t write anymore about this film, because it gets me mad, just thinking about the waste of time that the talent went through in order to do this movie. Why did they sign on for it? Why didn’t they try and do something better with what they were given? The film seems amateurish, from the script, to its “comedy”
