Every family has secrets especially the family in the period occult horror The Last Thing Mary Saw. After months of teasing Shudder finally reveal the full Trailer ahead of it’s launch on the streaming channel this month.

Religion and horror is an great recipe for creepy challenging films. Edoardo Vitaletti’s debut feature adds another layer of setting the film setting it in the ninetieth century. Oh did we mention it stars Orphan star Isabelle Fuhrman?

For this one, we find ourselves in winter of 1843. Mary finds herself under investigation largely thanks to the mysterious death of her grandmother. Her recollection of the events sheds new light on the ageless forces behind the tragedy.

When you bring fanaticism into the picture in regards to religion, it opens a new set of doors. This genuinely looks a slow burning unsettling film, that may just suggest something else is at work here…

The Last Thing Mary Saw begins in Southold, New York, 1843: Young Mary (Stefanie Scott, Insidious: Chapter 3), blood trickling from behind the blindfold tied around her eyes, is interrogated about the events surrounding her grandmother’s death. As the story jumps back in time, we witness Mary, raised in a repressively religious household, finding fleeting happiness in the arms of Eleanor (Isabelle Fuhrman, Orphan), the home’s maid. Her family, who believe they are seeing, speaking, and acting on God’s behalf, view the girls’ relationship as an abomination, to be dealt with as severely as possible. The couple attempt to carry on in secret, but someone is always watching, or listening, and the wages of perceived sin threaten to become death, with the tension only heightened by the arrival of an enigmatic stranger (Rory Culkin, Waco, Halston) and the revelation of greater forces at work.

The cast of this film includes Rory Culkin, Stefanie Scott, Isabelle Fuhrman, Carolyn McCormick, Judith Roberts, and Shane Coffey.

The Last Thing Mary Saw will premiere exclusively on Shudder from 20th January.
