Dune Director Denis Villeneuve Offers Update On Franchise Timeline

Dune: Part Two coming to Digital

Director Denis Villeneuve has offered an update on where Dune: Messiah will start.

Still in the scripting phase, the director has stated his motivation to work on the third instalment of the franchise much earlier than anticipated was due to the love and appreciation of the films from fans.

He told Collider that the film will follow the ending of Dune: Part 2, but 12 years on.

Villeneuve said: “Chani’s heart is broken. And it’s the beginning of the Holy War.”

It comes after the last instalment took the world by storm in 2024. Following the excitement for the next film, Villeneuve commented that it would take some time before he would conclude the trilogy.

He added: “I was expecting to do something else before, but frankly, that’s the inspiration that came to my mind as I took a break this summer and was going back and finishing the story. I was really moved by the way Part Two was received by cinephiles around the world.  And I felt an appetite and a desire to see more and a responsibility to finish that story.”

It is expected the film could land in cinemas around 2027 due to the long filming and post-production stages.
