AfterThe Lighthouse, we know this will be no ordinary Viking film, this is a Robert Eggers Viking film! Expect the unexpected, brutality men’s bones shaking and breaking in 10th century Iceland (well pretending, it’s actually Northern Ireland!)

Alexander Skarsgård is Amleth, a Viking prince who has one thing on his mind vengeance! Revenge the murder of his father (Ethan Hawke) and abduction of his mother (Nicole Kidman) when he was a child.

Whilst Eggers films may have divided audiences, we’ve been waiting a long time for a first look at this thriller. Like many films, it started last year only to be delayed thanks to the pandemic. The footage doesn’t disappoint, which is great as this is the filmmaker’s biggest production to date.

This film does hint it might not be a straight up revenge film, the trailer tease potential mystical feel to things. Egger’s has co-written the film with Icelandic poet Sjón who has worked with   who also happens to be in the cast too! Her first film role since Lars Von Trier‘s Dancer In The Dark.

From visionary director Robert Eggers comes The Northman, an action-filled epic that follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder.

The rest of the cast includes Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk, Willem Dafoe, Murray McArthur, Ian Gerard Whyte, Kate Dickie, Hafpór Júlíus Björnsson, and Ralph Ineson. Universal Pictures will release The Northman in the UK, Ireland and USA from 22nd April 2022.
