‘Buffy’ Reboot in the Works at Hulu, Sarah Michelle Geller Returning

It’s being reported that a follow-up series to Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works at Hulu with Sarah Michelle Geller set to star.
It’s been over twenty years since Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired its final episode, but now it looks like Hulu is ready for a brand new chapter, with Sarah Michelle Gellar reportedly reprising her role as the iconic Buffy Summers, the titular vampire slayer.
The pilot has assembled an interesting mix of creatives with Oscar winner Chloé Zhao set to direct the pilot, and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Zhao is best known for her film Nomadland, which made her the second woman ever to win the Best Director Oscar. She is also known for her Marvel Studios outing, 2021’s The Eternals. The pilot will be written by sisters Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, who are also attached as showrunners. The duo has a long list of TV credits including Fringe, Haven, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, however, they are best known for show-running the first season of the Peacock series Poker Face starring Natasha Lyonne.
The original 1997 Buffy the Vampire Slayer series was actually a reboot of a 1992 film of the same name starring Kristie Swanson. Similarly, back in 2018, when a reboot was last in talks, writer Monica Owusu-Bree, (Midnight, Texas) was attached to a project that would have followed a brand new slayer.
Geller’s casting indicates that this new show will be something of a sequel series, rather than a complete reset. However, Variety is reporting that this revival “would focus on a new Slayer, and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series”. Whether or not any of the other original Buffy cast would return is currently unconfirmed.
Joss Whedon, who created Buffy, has no involvement in the reboot. He faced a number of misconduct allegations in 2021.
