Aquaman ‘Drowns’ Spider-Man to the top of the Official Film Chart

Going by the critical response Spider-Man would win by a beatdown, not this week! Aquaman makes a splash at Number 1 in its first week on the Official Film Chart, outselling the rest of the Top 5 combined.
Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) discovers he’s the half-Atlantean heir to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, becoming Aquaman to prevent a war between the worlds of ocean and land, and prove his worth as the future king. Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe also star.
It pushes last week’s chart-topper Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald drops two to Number 5.
Meanwhile, fellow superhero film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse hangs on to Number 4 for a second week on digital s only. Could the hero swing to the Number 1 spot when it releases on disc on April 22.
Another new entry, the Peter Jackson produced dystopian steampunk action film Mortal Engines, roles in at Number 6. Venom returns to the Top 10, climbing 6 places to Number 7; A Star Is Born lands at 8; Creed II drops four spots to Number 9, and Taron Egerton’s incarnation of Robin Hood rounds off the countdown at Number 10.
This week’s Official Film Chart features an exclusive clip of Will Ferrell and John C Reilly discussing their reunion in Holmes & Watson. The adventure-comedy caper will be available to & Keep from April 20. Will the sales prove the critical response was a fabrication?
The Queen biopic tops out the home entertainment release chart for the first quarter of the year, which counts all sales on disc and from the beginning of 2019 up until March 30. Back in March we revealed the musical film sold more in its first four weeks than 2018’s biggest-seller The Greatest Showman did in its equivalent opening period.
In second place, Venom is the biggest comic book film of 2019 so far, with Tom Hardy’s masked Marvel anti-hero one of six superhero adventures in the Top 40 so far this year, including Avengers: Infinity War at 16 and Incredibles 2 at 23.
The British public clearly enjoy a singalong, with musical films taking four of the Top 10 placings; ing Bohemian Rhapsody is A Star Is Born (3), The Greatest Showman (5) and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (7). All of these films also peaked at Number 1 on the Official Film Chart; in total, eight of the Top 10 best-sellers of 2019 to date have reached the top spot.
Notably, last week’s Official Film Chart Number 1, Ralph Breaks The Internet, makes the Top 40 despite only ing its first week’s sales in the period.
The Official Film Chart is unveiled each Wednesday and is the subject of a Top 10 Official Film Chart online show, published on OfficialCharts.com and available for media syndication.
The chart – the result of a partnership between the Official Charts Company, the British Association for Screen Entertainment and incorporating data from retailer of the Entertainment Retailers Association – is published on OfficialCharts.com every Wednesday at noon and counts movie s from services including Amazon, iTunes, Sky Store, Virgin Media Store, Rakuten TV, Talk Talk TV, as well as 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD disc sales from all high street and online retailers
