Andy Muschietti (‘IT’) To Direct Attack On Titan Remake

When you have an unexpected hit film, usually you move onto bigger hopefully better things. IT director Andy Muschietti will literally be moving to’ bigger’ things to direct an English adaptation of Attack On Titans.

From creating one of Stephen King’s scariest books to one of the craziest Manga comic books to date. Muschietti certainly is dreaming big and set to give that Japanese comic book a Hollywood big blockbuster remake. The question is, will he stay true to the source give the Western cinephiles a truly bonkers film (or films)?

According to Variety, will direct a feature film adaptation for Warner Bros. A deal that’s in the final stages of discussion Japanese publishing giant Kodansha. Harry Potter franchise helmer David Heyman will produce alongside Masi Oka and Muschietti’s sister Barbara.

Attack On Titans was created by Hajime Isayama in 2009. A story about giant humanoid creatures (called Kyojin ranging between 10 to 50 feet in height)who appeared on an alternate Earth. They nearly wiped out humanity by devouring them without remorse or reason. Those survivors congregated behind 3 monster walls living in unease for over 100 years. Many growing up never seeing a Titan, that all changed when a colossus Titan (200 feet) appeared destroying a wall letting the smaller Titans attack.

The main story particularly focuses on three leads, Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert. All wondering what life is like on the other side of the walls. They soon find out after the Colossus Titan attack. There’s so much going on in this Manga which eventually became an Anime in 2013.

This film won’t be the first time Attack On Titans has been adapted into a live action feature. Back in 2014, there was a 2 part film directed by Shinji Higuchi (read our review here).

Manga/Anime adaptations haven’t always had the best of times even in Hollywood as well as Japan. Ghost In The Shell is the perfect example, a film that possibly misunderstood, next to Hollywood’s longtime attempts to bring Akira to the big screen. Muschietti has a lot of work to deliver something that Hollywood and Manga/Anime fans will both appreciate.
