Alex Garland to adapt Elden Ring for A24

For someone who said he’d step back from directing after 2024’s Civil War, Alex Garland is looking busier than ever. The multifaceted writer/director/author recently received acclaim for his brutally uncompromising war epic Warfare, co-directed with Ray Mendoza, and in June he reunites with Danny Boyle for 28 Years Later.
Deadline reports that Garland will now be adapting Elden Ring for indie hit-makers A24. The movie purports to be a live-action adaptation of the smash-hit RPG series, which was first released in 2022.
Elden Ring is an epic fantasy saga created under the guidance of From Software’s Hidetaka Miyazaki. Based on a story by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, it has sold more than 30 million units worldwide and the spin-off, Elden Ring Nightreign, is scheduled for release on May 30th.
The open world engine of Elden Ring deploys combat and intellectual strategy. The player assumes the role of an outcast being known as a Tarnished, roving around the mystical Lands Between in a bid to become the Elden Lord. Acclaimed as one of the greatest games of all time, it will surely prove catnip for Garland’s fertile imagination.
Elden Ring continues Garland’s fruitful partnership with A24 with whom he has collaborated on all of his directorial features. This includes his acclaimed directorial debut
Ex-Machina (2015), Annihilation (2018) and the controversial Men (2022). He also worked with A24 on the aforementioned Civil War and Warfare.
Before turning his hand to directing, Garland scripted Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) and Sunshine (2007). He also scripted 2000 AD’s Dredd (2012) and the Kazuo Ishiguro adaptation Never Let Me Go (2010). Prior to all that, Garland’s breakout novel The Beach was adapted by Boyle into a film in 2000 starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
Garland has past form when it comes to gaming adaptations. He co-wrote Ninja Theory’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic adventure offering Enslaved: Odyssey To The West and also came close to adapting the Halo movie back in 2005 before the idea was nixed.
His work will be on display again in 28 Years Later, the third instalment in the viral outbreak horror series. The movie is released on 19th June .
