Alan Cumming Teases Game Changing Makeup Process For Avengers: Doomsday

Ahead of his highly anticipated return to the character of Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday, Alan Cumming has revealed in an interview with NBC’s Today with Jenna & Friends, via Deadline that the makeup process has changed significantly since he last played the character back in 2003.
Cumming said, “It’s 23 years since I was a superhero,” further adding that “I’m going back to being a 60-year-old superhero and everyone seems lovely.”
Filming on Avengers: Doomsday starts soon in London, with Cumming confirming that makeup tests have started. “Actually, what’s great about it, it was four and a half to five hours before, and now it was 90 minutes. Before all the tattoos were done by hand because they hadn’t decided on them before we started filming and now there are all these little things that stick on — it’s a game changer.”
His portrayal of the character was last seen in 2003’s X2: X-Men United. He will reprise the role of Nightcrawler for the MCU project where he will be reunited with his co-stars Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops).
The actor mentioned in a post on his official website that “the character is really interesting, the message of the film (tolerance of others who are different from us) was very timely and unusual for a Hollywood blockbuster, but the real drag was having to spend over four hours a day having two men poke my face. Then there were the harnesses for the tail and for flying, the feet, the hands — which made going to the loo a group effort, the teeth, the lenses, oh God don’t get me started.”
Cumming seems to be excited to revisit the role after all these years, noting in the aforementioned interview “It’s going to be nuts.” Fans have been waiting over two decades for his return to the role, and now they don’t have long to wait to see him don the blue makeup and tail once again.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit UK cinemas on May 1, 2026.
